What Should You Carry In A Diaper Bag For A Smooth Outing With Your Baby

The baby is now out of your womb and ready to explore the world. As parents it’s an exciting time for us, taking the baby out of the home to further its adventure. We want to unveil new sensations to the baby and enjoy parenting, while introducing others to our baby. And thus begin our trips. Sometimes for a few hours to a nearby locale or to a loved one’s home. Even if it’s a quick dash to the supermarket, the diaper bag becomes our constant companion. A well-organized diaper bag makes all trips super convenient. Here I list my top essentials so that you and your baby are at complete ease.

Choose The Right Diaper Bag ►

Choosing the diaper bag itself needs thought. We chose a backpack diaper bag instead of a sling for convenience. Since we will be carrying it with us at all times, the even weight distribution on our shoulders in a back pack, reduces the strain to the neck. My hands are free for the baby. Also, backpacks are unisex, so men prefer to carry it too. Should you choose a sling, make sure to get one that is comfortable. We also took into account the spaciousness of a diaper bag. Our bag had multiple pockets which were easy to reach. This helped us organize it better. An insulated pocket in a diaper bag assists to set up an easy feed for the baby. It keeps the baby milk/ water warm. If you travel often, investing in multiple diaper bags can be considered. Click to see our Diaper Bag Recommendations.

Diapering Essentials ►

The primary component in a diaper bag, as the name suggests, are diapers. The baby will most likely pee, if not poop, in the time span. Changing diapers at the right time ensures hygiene and baby comfort. We usually packed for a few hours, so 2-3 diapers were sufficient. However, if you are traveling for a longer duration, the numbers increase. A pack of wet wipes to clean the baby in between diaper changes, keeps the baby fresh and happy. If you chose to clean the baby with cotton and water, do carry cotton pads for convenience. Also, I carried at-least one disposable bag to hygienically do away with a used diaper.

For Makeshift Changing Station ►

To change a baby, we need a changing station. However, not all places are equipped with one. Even if they are it’s always advisable to not expose them straight on a public changing station. At times, we might need to change the baby in the car or at another’s home. To make a quick makeshift changing station, I carried a quick dry sheet, spreading it underneath the baby, prevents any soiling. Quick Dry sheets are available in different sizes starting from Small for a Newborn to Extra Large Sheets which can be used for Beds. Furthermore, I carried a small bed sheet, to spread under the quick dry sheet. This prevented any chance of dirtying someone else’s bed sheets, if we are changing our baby in their room.

Change Of Clothes ►

Extra pairs of clothes for the baby, in the diaper bag is a must. A baby is a master at messing up its clothes while outdoors. Spit, regurgitation or be it sudden rains, as parents we are prepared. A minimum of two changes is advised. For longer trips, increase the number of changes.

Feeding Essentials ►

A hungry baby is an upset baby. One never knows when a baby needs a feed. If you are breast feeding, it’s easier. But for a formula fed baby, all the necessary components should be ready and easy to reach. So, in a diaper bag, make sure to carry a flask of water, formula and a sterilized bottle. Invest in a good quality flask. This would keep the water at the right temperature for the child. The formula too needs to be carried along. To make the process faster, you can choose formula dispensers. In a formula dispenser, you can pre fill the compartments with measured scoops of the formula. This takes away the hassle of carrying an entire tin of formula. Feeding bottle too needs to be pre sterilized. The number of bottles that you carry depends on the duration of your trip. Along with it a bib (to prevent milk spills), a hand towel (to clean the baby’s face) and a hand sanitizer (to use yourself before and after every feed or change), makes the trip easy.

Basic Medication ►

I always chose to carry the essential medications for my son, for all trips. For me it was Colicaid and Nasoclear. Colicaid eases any stomach discomforts and Nasoclear helps to ease any nasal congestion. Please do consult your medical practitioner to understand the essential medications for your baby. Additionally, you might choose to carry a baby moisturizer and a baby sunscreen.

To Engage Your Baby ►

Toys are always an important component to the diaper bag. While outdoors, it is necessary to engage your baby. Keeping the baby entertained makes a trip easy for parents. Rattles and high quality teethers were my choices for Kabir, as your baby is most likely to put everything in its mouth. Do clean the toys and store them well after every trip.

As each baby is different, a parent might need to add more to the diaper bag. The above essentials are just the basics for a short trip. Understanding the baby’s needs and planning in accordance makes trips a joyful experience. Please feel free to let me know your basics for a diaper bag. I am just a message away for any queries or suggestions. Should you choose to watch the content in a video format, here’s the link. Travel safe and explore the magic of childhood with your baby. All That You Need To Know About Baby Poop (0-3 months)

New born potty. Soon after a baby arrives, do you realize that potty too can be a topic of conversation especially amongst new parents. This might be hilarious to some; however, baby stool is indicator of new born’s health. For 0-3months of age, the baby can hardly express itself. Parents look at physical indicators to gauge day to day well-being. Hence, potty and its routine is always under scrutiny.

To bring clarity to the situation, let’s understand that babies go through a lot of changes. Especially in the transition stage, straight out of womb, babies tend to have a lack of routine. Sometimes they drink a lot of milk, sometimes they don’t, sleep patterns fluctuate and more.

Frequency

An exclusively breast feed baby will poop according to its body functions, i.e., whether it poops once in 7days or 7 times in one day, it’s absolutely normal. Breast milk is extremely light, hence most of it gets digested anyway. There is no need to panic in such situations.

Color & Texture

Color and texture of baby poop, is often a main cause of concern in parents. Brown, green, yellow, the color can change. Only when it is black, white or has blood spots, does a baby need to be rushed to a pediatrician. The texture too can be pasty, solid, granular, frothy or semi liquid. The change in texture is normal too. However, should you feel that your baby is suffering from loose motions, seek medical advice immediately.

Baby poop can change according to the diet of the lactating mother as well. While wanting the best for our baby, we do tend to get carried away. I hope this article has relieved some of your baby poop panic. The video format for this article is linked below. I would love to hear your thoughts. Do share this with other new parents. We are together in this journey. Enjoyed simplified parenting.

Hing Solution For Baby Gas Relief | Tried & Tested Home Remedy

Our culture has a wealth of home remedies. Especially for my newborn, I chose time tested traditional cures. This Hing solution is one of them. Babies often suffer from the discomfort of colic pain or gas. Hing works its magic in such cases. Most Indian kitchens have it readily at hand. Easy to prepare, it gives relief to your baby in minutes. I have used this for Kabir with remarkable results from his birth till he was around 2 years old.

Hing Solution Ingredients

A pinch of hing
Water- 1tbsp

Method Of Preparation

In a pan, boil one tbsp of water. Add a pinch of hing and stir. If your baby is suffering from severe discomfort, you may increase the quantity of hing. Switch off the gas when the solution is boiling and keep stirring. The hing should dissolve in the water. One can note that the water will change colour and become somewhat off-white. Keep stirring to bring the temperature of the water to lukewarm. Test with fingers and transfer to a bowl (should not be hot for your babies skin).

Application

Dip two of your fingers into the hing solution. Then gently apply the solution on your baby’s tummy, in a circular motion. Do take care that the solution doesn’t enter the navel. This will quickly provide relief to your baby.

I have also linked below the video format of the preparation and application. Do watch the method and let us know your feedback on this home remedy. Feel free to share this with new moms . Enjoy simplified parenting.

5 Home Remedies for Baby Colic or Gas

As new parents it is heartbreaking to you see your baby suffer from colic/gas pain. Unable to express their discomfort, the baby persistently cries. This majorly affects babies between 0-6 months, leaving them cranky and affecting their sleep & comfort. While suckling milk, they often take in a lot of air, that causes the issue. Frequently medicating a child isn’t recommended. Here’s what we did to help Kabir avoid the painful moments. I share them with you so that your child can continue being happy and comfortable.

1. Hing Solution

Hing solution in water, applied carefully on the baby’s tummy, works like magic. Boil a tbsp of water with a pinch of Hing. Let the Hing dissolve. Cool it down to lukewarm and apply. To know the procedure in detail, I have linked the video format of the same (How to prepare Hing Solution). This was our most dependable route to help Kabir’s discomfort.

2. Stomach Massage

Massages, be it whole body or stomach massage, is enjoyed by babies. It helps in preventing gas problems. A loving massage before bath or sleep time, is also a wonderful way to connect to your baby. To avoid gas problems, regular stomach massage is strongly advised. There is a specific technique to give a stomach massage. Click here to see the video on how to Massage a Newborn Baby.

3. Newborn Exercise

A newborn is often just lying flat on its back. Like for adults, dedicated movement patterns release the gas in tummy. Gently helping your baby to move its limbs, helps in easy passage of any gas that might have formed. You can learn the exercise routine by watching the video linked here.

4. Feeding and Burping

As mentioned above, it is during feeding that a baby suckles in a lot of air. If the baby is fed while laying it flat on the back, chances of gas increases. Instead, holding the baby at a 30-degree angle, while feeding, helps the baby to digest the milk better.

Burping the baby immediately after feeding, is a must. Sometimes just out of sheer exhaustion, one may want to skip burping. However, this is detrimental to the baby. There are various ways to get a child to burp. The Internet has many guidelines about it. Try and see which one works best for your baby. As long as the baby burps after feeding, chances of gas pain is significantly reduced.

5. Colicaid or Gripe Water

We were suggested to use Colicaid by a pediatrician and Gripe Water by friends & family (though we never used Gripe Water however a lot of people have benefited from it), in case of severe gas problems. Depending on your preference, you can choose between Colic Aid (allopathy) or Gripe water (homeopathy). These have no side effects and provide quick relief. It is advised that you keep one of the two at home on a regular basis. Consult your pediatrician for any guidance regarding the same.

These five tips would definitely help you and your baby have a jolly time. Do reach out to me with feedbacks, comments or queries. It gives me immense pleasure to hear your parenting experiences. How To Increase Breast Milk Supply | 4 Home Remedies To Increase Breast Milk

Breast milk is best for your baby. It’s unanimously hailed for being the complete nutrition for a baby’s growth. Be it your pediatric doctor or WHO, all raise the awareness of breast feeding, at-least for the first six months. Even the pack of baby milk formula highlights it. However, as the baby grows the demand of breast milk doesn’t always match up to the supply in a mother’s body. This causes stress and unwanted guilt for new mothers. Switching to formula or starting solids earlier than six months, is the usual route to deal with it. It’s best to start solids only after six months. To begin, let me assure you that most moms face this, so you are not alone in this.

To put the stress at ease, that in turn affects your milk supply, let me say that I too have been through it. My breast milk started decreasing after my baby turned 3 months. Thankfully, I had support from my gynecologist and pediatrician to help me boost my supply. I was open in asking for help to understand and deal with it. Do consult your physician without a doubt, should you find yourself in need of it. After following the three easy steps listed below, I pumped 8 feeds and supplemented it with one formula feed on a daily basis.

Increase the consumption of water.

As easy as this step sounds, it’s one that we overlook the most. Our lives are taken over by the baby’s needs and we begin to ignore our health. However, it’s from us that our baby derives its nutrition. 70% of breast milk is water. Hence, 10- 12 glasses of water is a minimum that a mom’s body needs to maintain the supply. Every breast feed should start and end with you drinking water.

Cumin or Jeera is Breastmilk’s Best Friend.

Cumin or Jeera is a magical ingredient to increase your milk supply. Every Indian pantry will have a stock of it. Use jeera in all your food, be it paranthas, jeera rice or just drinking water boiled with jeera. It will show a remarkable improvement.

Take Care Of Your Diet.

There is a direct correlation between your health & your breastmilk supply, hence it’s imperative that you take care of your diet & consume nutritional food. Four things you must include in diet which are Oats, Porridge, Gourd & Raw-Papaya. Make sure you consume Green Leafy Vegetables daily & it is also advised to increase your calorie intake by 500 calories (under doctor’s recommendation).

Lactonic Granules or Similar Products*

Lactonic Granules (*should be taken with doctor’s advice only) are a life saver to hasten up the supply of breast milk. Do consult your physician before taking it. It is easily available over the counter at any medical store. Completely natural with a nourishing blend of spices and herbs (including cumin), it’s a stimulant that needs to be consumed twice a day with milk. The dosage is measured with the spoon enclosed in the pack. In case of severe lack of milk production, one can consume it thrice a day.

I have personally witnessed the miracle of the above steps. Even when my son turned 5 months, I had more than enough to keep him satiated.
